A low-protein diet is used in people with abnormal kidney function to prevent worsening of their kidney disease . The diet is often low in sodium and potassium as well. For some people on this diet, fluid restriction is also necessary. And if you have diabetes along with kidney disease, a low-carbohydrate diet may be necessary.

a friend of mine was on dialysis waiting for a kidney for transplant and was severly restricted on liquids, sodium and proteins. Your doctor should be answering these questions. This is serious and not a time for guessing.

I can only tell you from personal experience. Kidney disease and stones are rampant in my family. My dad lost his kidney to stones and disease. I never ate dairy products even as a child. As an adult, I learned how dairy can cause stones because of the high calcium content, which is what causes stones. Approx. 25 yrs ago, I got scared because I thought I had stones. The pain was awful. I went to see a specialist right away because I suddenly had visions of my dad screaming with pain and I did not want to go through that. He ordered a special CAT scan with dye. It looked at my kidney in cross sections. He called me 3 days later, and said he taught at Harvard Medical School and could he use my scans in his class. I asked why. That was when he told me that he has never seen such perfect kidney like this in a woman of my age. He said there was not one bit of calcification and asked me what my secret was. i told him that I don't eat dairy. His response."Well, I guess milk doesn't do a body good does it?" I was so happy and then I made sure I would never, ever eat dairy. Out of 12 children, I am the only one who never got a kidney stone.
