Renal care and dietary info please?

i can't seem to find the dietary info to help pre- kidney dialysis' so i can prepare for it. i am now at a low percentage of kidney function

Hi, I have had renal failure for many years, had a transplant and waiting for another.

Try the KPA (Kidney Patients Association) website for advice, but in general, drink plenty of fluids, eat a balanced diet, and avoid too much dairy (you may be at risk from high cholesterol). If you are going to need CAP Dialysis, your diet will not be affected much, so try not to worry.

one of the main functions of the kidneys are the regulation of red marrow formation.. vitamin D.
drink whole milk with vitamin D.
keep from eating processed foods, refain from taking vitamin pills.. instead consume them.. ie: oranges for vitamin c.

best of luck~

Hi, really sorry about your kidneys. You have to watch your potassium levels so don't bananas or anything else with potassium in as it will effect your heart, also phosphate, this makes you even more itchy than you will be. Things like milk and cheese. They advise you use herbs to flavor your food instead of salt. Watch sauces, ice cream. anything that is a liquid as it part of your fluid restriction. No coffee. If you are on steroids watch your sugar intake as steroids can bring diabetes on. No chocolate, no crisps, no grapes. Its hard to remember but these are the things that I avoided. You will have a chance to see a dietitian about your diet and also they should give you some written information on what to eat or to avoid. I was never much good with my diet when I was on dialysis but as I say this is what I avoided. I think you can have some things but in small amounts. I was prescribed Fortisip drinks to help with diet. Good luck.

I'm sorry to hear that you're going on dialysis. Even though it is very difficult, you will get through it. It depends on what type of dialysis you are getting, peritoneal or hemodialysis. The diet for hemo is much more strict. I had peritoneal dialysis and I ate pretty much whatever I wanted (I was 16-17 at the time so I had the advantage of being otherwise healthy). Just be very careful about sodium intake and potassium. I would also recommend monitoring your phosphorous intake because that is also a problem with kidney disease (mine is always low even though I take supplements and drink milk, etc.) Other than that, the diet is very restrictive sadly. I wish you the best.
