RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy) Info!?

I was diagnosed with RSD today?
I know nothing about it but does anyone have any info on it?!
I'd really appreciate it!
Does it get better or worse with time?

Other info:
I have had 2 knee surgeries since June.
I had nodular PVNS (giant cell tumor) removal
and then an arthoscopy to check for possible diffused PVNS.
Then they came back today and said that it is diffused and i have a really loose ACL b/c they had to resect some of it with my first surgery.

RSD/CRPS is basically a malfunction of your sympathetic nervous system, so it is essentially misfiring pain signals to your brain which is typically made worse with slight touch to the skin. RSD/CRPS may get worse or better with time, it is different for every person. I got my RSD/CRPS from a knee surgery 2 years ago, and luckily I am doing better, and am able to attend a full schedule at school this year. Did your doctor refer you to a pain management doctor? They typically work with RSD/CRPS. Sympathetic blocks are typically the first treatment along with physical therapy and desensitization (some doctors do not recommend pt, and desensitization therapy, but it can help patient, but if your pain begins to get worse like it can with some people make sure to let your doctor know and discontinue the therapy). Further treatments may include IV treatments, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, epidural catheters, pain pumps, and a device called a spinal cord stimulator (SCS), (you can get more info on this device at www.ans-medical.com). For me my SCS has brought the most relief for me, but every patient is different and there is no "cure" that works for everyone with RSD/CRPS. Here are some useful resources for RSD/CRPS-

Good luck! Feel free to e-mail me with any questions or just for support, I know what you are going through!

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) involves a malfunction of the nervous system and has been known by many names. Now it's most commonly known as RSD or complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). RSD occurs when the part of the sympathetic (unconscious) nervous system that controls blood flow and sweat glands in the hand and arm is disturbed and becomes overactive. Burning pain, swelling, stiffness and discolouration of the hand or other extremities develop. Infection, pressure on a nerve, heart attack, stroke or surgery may trigger RSD, but it's usually brought on by injury. Even minor injuries can be responsible, but the pain tends to be greater than would be expected from the type of injury sustained. Often, the exact reason for RSD remains unknown. If identified early, RDS is treatable. Treatment is aimed at controlling pain, enabling the person to regain or improve the function of the affected limb, and providing emotional support. Nerve blocks are most effective - these are injections of local anaesthetic into the affected nerve. Medication may also be used to relieve symptoms, including painkillers and drugs such as amitriptyline, which is most commonly used to treat depression but can treat nerve pain too. Other drugs that may be prescribed include gabapentin and oral steroid medication. Physiotherapy is important to help regain function and relieve symptoms. Occupational therapy can help someone learn how to overcome the difficulties they're facing with everyday activities. If RDS has progressed significantly, surgery may be recommended.
