Anyone have any info on the symptons of RSD(Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy)?? The only uniform symptom is extreme pain, but many other patients have color changes to the affected area, shiny skin, slow or faster hair/nail growth, a burning sensation, and hot or cold to the touch of the skin. The pain is worsened by light touch to the skin. You can get more information at www.rsds.org I have had this condition for five years now. the main and most important symptom is constant chronic pain, usually burning. Also, there is usually an initiating event. Other symptoms could include, but are not required or limited to, swelling, color changes, temperature changes, and limited range of motion. RSD is a complicated problem but I will try to explain it as best I can. The main symptom is pain, usually a burning quality and the skin can actually become hypersensitive to the point where even a light touch is uncomfortable. RSD usually develops after an injury, or surgery. Sometimes the initial injury can be relatively minor in comparison to the amount of pain the person has later. The problem results from abnormal transmission of pain signals in nerve fibers (sympathetic fibers) that usually do not carry these types of signals. The diagnosis is difficult to make, but usually the pain doesn't fall into the usual pattern of the nerve distribution that carries pain normally. sympathetic nerves also control blood vessels so you may see skin changes, or temperature changes in that extremity involved.....this is just a short summary....hope it helps There are several groups online for those who have RSD/CRPS. Feel free to contact me if you're interested in knowing more about the very active online group that I share ownership with someone else. - Barbara torreyb@prodigy.net |
