Rectal Cancer?

My boyfriend's father was diagnosed with rectal cancer today. He's really upset about it an i feel that the only way i can help is if i know more about it. if anyone knows if you can die from it, or what kind of treatments you can get for it, basically any information on it please let me know. Thanks you.

A friend of a friend had it a couple years back...here's what I know:

It's cancer that forms in the last few inches of the large intestine.

Chances of recovery depend on how far along it is (if it has spread to any other areas of the body), the patient's general health, and whether it's recurring.

There's four different stages:
Stage 1 aka Dukes A (don't ask me why it's called that): spread to the inner parts of the rectum
Stage 2 aka Dukes B: has spread to the outside of the rectum but not the lymph nodes
Stage 3 aka Dukes C: has spread to the nearby lymph nodes but nowhere else.
Stage 4 aka Dukes D: has spread to the other parts of the body, such as the liver or lungs.

Surgery is the most common treatment. Even if all the cancer cells are removed during the operation there is usually chemo or radiation therapy after that. Sometimes there are clinical trials (called biologic therapy or something).

Treatment depend on what stage the cancer is at.

Stage 1: The probability of being alive in five years is approximately 70-80%.
Stage 2: After five years: 50-60%.
Stage 3: 30-40%.
Stage 4: Less than 10%.

There's approximately 40,000 cases diagnosed each year.

Tell your boyfriend it's genetic - :( and is most likely to develop past age 50.

Cancer is an awful thing. However bad it seems, don't lose hope because there is always a chance. I hope everything works out alright. Good luck with everything. I'm praying for you.

oh. I am so sorry. I don't know anything, but that must be terrible.

I don't know much about it, but please check on the Internet. The actress Farrah Fawcett has it and she seems to be doing okay right now. Left untreated, I'm sure it can kill. It's probably a really unpleasant thing to deal with.Hope he gets some good help.

It is terrible, contact any otherdocter

It is likely they will remove a section of his colon and then treat him with chemo and he should be fine. I have an aunt and a good friend that have recovered and been clean for years.

Farrah Faust has retail cancer and other people have died of it

future treatment?

Treatment for this cancer is highly successful if caught early enough. As mentioned before, usually they start with surgery if the patient is fit and well otherwise. They will remove the affected part of the rectum. He may require a colostomy bag after this if a large amount of rectum is removed. He will probably also be prescribed a course of chemotherapy. Radiotherapy may also be used before the surgery, to downgrade (make smaller) the tumour so it's easier to remove. It can also be used after the surgery to make sure complete irradication of the tumour. His treament options totally rely on how advanced his cancer is, and how fit and well he is in general.
Hope this helps.

This might be something to look into - 6 - Try Vitamin C therapy. A few years ago a cancer specialist came out with a paper that said the best cancer/infection fighter found to date was Interferon. At the time it was $15,000 a gram. The paper also said that Interferon was a by-product of the natural breakdown of Vitamin C in your body. Shortly after that the FDA tried to make Vitamin C by prescription only. Guess why? The FDA has the RDA for Vitamin C set at 64 mg a day, just enough to ward off scurvy. 25 Linus Pauling, who got a Nobel Prize for his work with Vitamin C and a second Nobel Prize for Organic Chemistry, said that 1000 mg a day should be the minimum and 2000 mg a day if you are sick or smoke. (If you find this useful, copy it and give it to a friend. Somebody got to Yahoo and they delete this as soon as they find it) He played tennis almost daily until the day he died at 96. Personally, I got sick twice a year for 2 weeks at a time, for more than 20 years, with something to this day the doctors have no idea what it was, but for a week in the middle of those 2 weeks I was flat on my back. 26 I started Vitamin C therapy once I gave up on the doctors. I took enough to be asymptomatic for those 2 weeks. Too much and I got diarrhea and too little and I got sick. Within a narrow range, and it followed a bell curve over those 2 weeks, I was not sick. At the height I was taking 40,000 mg a day and 300,000 over the 2 weeks. 27 After 2 years of that I have not been sick since 鈥?more than 15 years. Vitamin C acts as a natural diuretic so you need to drink a lot of water and watch your body in total, but my kidneys did not dissolve as the doctors predicted, or get massive kidney stones as other predicted. I did not dissolve my bones as some predicted or completely calcify my joints as others predicted. I had no side effects at all. It might be something to consider.
