Maintenance entered my apt today and told me the building has been found to have radon. Should I be concerned? |
He installed a device and said he'd turn it on next week..he didn't know how high the level was but said can find out by calling the company..should I? It is true that radon gas is said to be a cause of lung cancer. More so in people who smoke. There are ways for your landlord to eliminate the radon exposure though. It is usually found where the ground is very rocky. It generally comes through the foundation and then into your interior air. I work in Real Estate and one thing I do know about radon tests are that they are really sensitive and can be easily thrown off. as a realtor, I am not allowed by my broker to even pick up the canister for my client if they have their home tested because apparently even handling the test the wrong way will give false results. Weather can be a factor too. One day you could have the test done and get high results, the next day, nothing. Best bet, talk to your landlord. see if he or she is doing a repeat test. If you are concerned for your health speak with your doctor. Hope this was helpful. radon comes from the ground, its more in basements then anywhere else, as long as its vented you be fine our Grandparents lived with it and they were fine. I don't think they know exactly what it causes yet. And you have to be exposed to it at a certain level for like 20 yrs for it to do damage. Seems like a racket to me. I just bought a house and the inspector tested for Radon. The test came back positive. So I had the seller install a $1000 system. (Just so when I go to sell I could save some money) Here are some links to help you |
