Facts About Radon?

I want to know some facts about radon. We talked about radon in health and I think we should test our basement because thats were I sleep, but my dad doesn't think that it's a problem. So what are some ways to get him to see that it is a problem. And that is causes caner. I need to find a way to get him to go out and buy a test. And are there any cheap ways to help lower the radon. So that if we have a high level. I can tell him what we can do to lower them in a cheep way. Thanks

The truth is that radon is found in all areas of the country and the only way to find out is to test. The vast majority of homes that I fix for elevated radon levels are new homes! The reason may be that we have learned to build homes so well sealed that radon gas and other pollutants are being trapped inside. But even older homes must be tested to be sure.

Radon is the #1 leading cause of lung cancer after smoking! It's estimated that 21,000 Americans die each year from radon exposure.

A Radon gas mitigation system can usually be installed for $800-$1200 depending on which part of the country you live in.

You'll find lots of good info in the link below.

tricky, cause it isn't a problem, unless it is a problem.

Usually, people test their houses when they learn from their neighbors that the neighbors have a problem.

In the US, the most common reason for having a radon problem is that the bricks that your house is made of
were slightly radioactive.

The cheap way to lower the risk is to leave the windows open - so the gas can dissipate.

this page gives you some links on how to get a "test it yourself at home kit." which should cost 20 or 30 dollars.

Your Dad may be right...

Radon is an odorless gas emitted from being trapped in granite rocks (not bricks) under houses for a long period of time.

In America, most of the homes which have been built within the last 10 years are exempt from worry about radon gas.

This is because the soil has been tested, and underlying pipes have been placed before the homes are built to prevent the buildup of radon gas within any granite rocks.

If your home is older than 10 years, then you can purchase a Radon Test Kit at a local hardware store for less than $30.

The first question is what part of the country you are in. Many parts have no radon problem. If you are in other areas, it is almost guaranteed to show up at some level. You should be able to ask the County Health Department if it is a local problem.
