If radiotherapy doesnt work, what next? |
I know someone who is having radiotherapy for a cancerous lump in the neck. If this doesnt work... what next? It depends on the cancer type actually. Some cancers shrink with radiotherapy which would make surgical excision of the mass easier. There are some that would follow radiotherapy with chemotherapy to 'chase the malignant cells in the blood' so to speak. A cancerous lump on the neck could be anything from a lymphoma, pharyngeal cancer, thyroid cancer, rhabdomyosarcoma (muscle cancer), or anything else on the neck area. A difficult question to answer with the limited information that you give. There are usually three options for cancer of / in the neck and they are radiation therapy, surgery and chemotherapy. For more detailed information, you would be advised to consult a doctor or oncologist. What kind of cancer? Best wishes to your friend. I had a melanoma on my neck. It spread to my lymph nodes in that area. I took radiation and chemo. The radiation on my neck sucked!!!! It has permanently damaged me. You need to know much more to say. Go to www.nccn.org and read but to do that you should have the stage of the cancer and the cellular type which is a technical term. So i doubt you can tell. Respect their privacy if they do not want to discuss it. Each person is different about that |
