Would it be possible for someone having radiotherapy 5 times a week, for 6-7 weeks to carry on working?

My dad will be having this as part of treatment for prostate cancer, and he plans to carry on working through out. He works shifts, and at the moment this alternates each week between nights and days, but he would be doing regular nights during this - will he even have the energy? or should he just go on the sick?

no he will be too tired after the treatment He needs to stay off work
My husband has prostrate cancer too

I think he will need to go sick. it could take a lot out of him.

I wish him lots of luck.

He won't know until tries. He should discuss his plans with his doctors and he may have to take reduced duties or extra breaks, but everyone is different.

Bless I hope he can win his fight (And I mean that) I will keep my fingers crossed that he will be o.k

I can not answer from my own experience, but every one I know who has treatment a couple of days a week does not have the energy to work. My neighbour does housework and gardening for a member of our church because this person is being treated 3 times a week and can barely do anything.
I advise you to prepare your dad so he doesn't get a total shock when he can not go to work.

God bless I hope and pray his treatment is successful.

sorry but if he is having that many treatments in one week there is no way he will be able to go to work. he is going to be very ill and weak so prepare yourself.

I would encourage your Dad to take the time off, it's pretty brutal treatment. He probably won't have the energy to work and may very well experience alot of nausea. Part of successful treatment is getting the rest you need and not run your body down any more than is necessary.
Good luck to your Dad, I know several people who have sucessfully recovered from postate cancer and lead happy, active lives.

it is all up to the individual person. I was supposed to have radation for my breast cancer; my radiologist told me it wouldn't really effect me too much, it's more of a topical issue (rash, dry, itchy, red). It's not the same effect chemotherapy would have on him, that would be tough and questionable.
My best friends mom just went thru radaition and she worked throughout hers she had her appointments in the a.m. and went to work after. When she had p.m. appts. she'd got to work and leave early for the appts. (that was my plan also)

Best of luck to your dad. I hope all works out for the best.

Quite honestly as someone who has had both Chemo and radiotherapy I found that having radiotherapy was very tiring. I worked through most of my treatment but I had a very obliging boss that let me work for as long as I could. He should drop his hours at least. Only he will know how it will affect him.

Id just like to wish your dad all the luck in the world.
Im guessing his work will suffer as a result of this treatment. Im hoping that if you are old enough to do a little job to help with the household finances, that you will make a concious effort to show willing and do it. Obviously if your dad has to go slow on his work a bit of xtra effort to help from you and any siblings will be appreciated (no matter the protests)
Your dad will need all your support. Im going to suggest here as well that any fixations you and siblings may have over the latest computer games or trainers take a serious step on to the back burner for a long while to come.
Life WILL get back to OK for you all, but in the meantime you have to be xtra vigilant to your Mum and dad's needs, and behave yourself/ves

Please also give your Mum and Dad lots of love and hugs. Show you do care. Its not sissy to do so, and it will mean the world to them both knowing they have all your support. Any very young siblings will also benefit from some hugs too

My mother has had 3 weeks of Radiotherapy the first few days she felt ok but as the treatment went on she felt more and more tired after a week she needed to go to bed for a while as soon as we got home.
I think your dad should go on the sick while under going the treatment because it really takes it out of you
Another thing the appointments are not always the same time

Is it possible? Sure! But not without added support. I helped my sister get through her chemo and radiation without having all the fatigue and other problems. I helped my f-i-l support his health so that when they cut his prostate and other parts out the cancer was either all gone or the tumor was no longer cancerous. I might add that the added support did not come from the pharmacy.

It's possible, but not probable. I had the same plans when I had rectal cancer, but I only made it half way through before I was too sick and worn down to continue.

Make no bones about it, radiotherapy will take a lot out of him and he will need to rest a lot to stay awake. If he was to work, it will put far more untold stress on his body even if his mind thinks differently.

Do whatever you need to do to convince him to go on a sick line. His doctor will issue a sick line anyway and he can be asked to write to your Dad's employers to explain what is happening and how long your Dad is expected to be off work.

No he will not have the energy.

He will get tired after the first few treatments. And will not be able to work. MAybe at first but not soon after.

He might get skin irritations, bowel issues and urination issues. It just depends on the person.

I had rads 5 times a week for 5 weeks, I think it was. I did continue to work (but I work part time), plus it was an hour drive to and from Mayo. I had a few days where I was tired, but I never felt sick. It was when I was getting pretty burned that it was hardest for me.

Every person is different. I think it would be reasonable for him to try doing what he is comfortable doing, and if worse comes to worse, he can cut his hours or take the time off.

I give him credit though, radiation is a tough treatment, at least it was for me. I would do chemo over radiation any day. Good luck to your family!

He will need to go sick! He will not be doing himself any favours by trying to work through the treatment. People react in various ways but generally extreme fatigue is a side effect.
