What is the prognosis of cancer pancreas after chemo and radiotherapy?

the patient is74 y. coplicated by diabetes and tumour m. ca19.9 after tretment lowered from 35000 to 1200

Generally speaking not good unfortunately. Chemotherapy response may be better in patients who are BRCA2 gene carriers. Some centers have protocols that allow neo-adjuvant chemo- (& radiation-) therapy before down-staging locally unresectable cancers in order to later allow surgical resection. The use of radiation in locally unresctable cancers is also the subject of some controversy. Best people to discuss these questions with are the medical and radiation oncologists involved.

Sorry to hear of your problem, the outlook is not good I'm afraid.

It is not an easy cancer to cure even in much younger patients it affects output of enzymes for food digestion and affects appetite, which makes it harder to find the strength for the body to fight off the cancer.

Here is a website for clinical trials. put in the disease "pancreatic cancer" in the search engine, hit the map button for local trials and don't forget to turn the pages.

Most pancreatic cancers are exocrine tumors, those that develop in the "ducts".Prognosis varies with each stage, but overall is poor( 5 yr survival is less than 2%).80 to 90 % are considered surgically undissectable. This is due to the late onset of symptoms, and diagnosis. Most treatment is pallitive in nature, and the emphises is on quality of life, and pain control. There is lots of excellent info @ The National Insititute of Health web site NIH.gov,and on Google. I'm sorry I couldn't find any good stat's for you. Please don't stray away from his MD's looking for some "quack" remedies and cures, they're out there just waiting to take thousands of dollars from very sick, desperate people. God bless, take care. SW RNP

Pancreatic cancer as you may have seen through information on the internet, carries a bleak prognosis. If it is inoperable, which the majority are, then it is incurable, chemotherapy is given to help prolong life. The standard drug in the UK is Gemcitabine, although the GEMCAP trial showed good results in adding capecitabine, adding around an extra 6 weeks to life expectancy. Pancreatic cancer is aggressive, so for the doctors to assess his/her response, and give any estimation at life expectancy, then they would need to re-scan (CT) to compare with the baseline scan performed prior to chemotherapy.
