Radiography/X-Ray?

is radiography/xray a good career with good income opportunities? I'm considering going to school for this but would like to know more. Also, what types of shifts do xray techs/radiographers typically work? Thanks

You can go to this site and see what a radiologic technologist makes in your state. It varies widely from area to area. The best way to make money is to get licensed in multiple modalities, such as x-ray, CT, MRI etc. The more licenses, the more in demand you will be and you will earn more money.

Go to the section which says "Annual Compensation within Each State"

As for the shifts we work.....as a newly licensed radiographer, you will probably end up doing per diem or evening/night shift. Most hospitals staff x-ray 24/7. As a newbie, you will likely get the work schedule which really varies. Maybe a night shift, followed by a PM shift, followed by another PM shift, followed by a day shift. As you gain seniority, you can get a more stabilized schedule. I work in a free standing imaging center, and we are only open 8-5, Monday through Friday. But, at a hospital, be prepared for nights, evenings and weekends, at least to start.

I would suggest that before you apply for a radiography program, try to observe the imaging department of your local hospital. Call the imaging department, ask to speak with the supervising or lead technologist, and explain your situation. Until you see what is involved in the job, you have no idea whether it is the career for you. It really is a good career. I have been a single mom since day one, and I make a good enough living that my daughter and I have never had to struggle or ask for financial help. Best wishes to you!

You can go to salary.com and see the average income for the area you live. You could work any type of shift since emergencies happen all the time and xrays are required for alot of things.

generally this is a 2 year program. the pay is nice.better yet, try nursing.there is usually a 2 year school to become an rn.the jobs are more plentiful, the pay better and there is always room for going up the ladder. and in the first year you can sit for the lpn test, and if u pass you can work while finishing your education.either way goodluck.:)michele
