Who has treated their dog with radiation therapy for cancer and what was the outcome?

My dog has 2 tumers, one on the leg and one on the foot. Had both removed and were told they are unrelated but one a mass cell tumer will probably come back. (on the elbow) Radiation Therapy is the suggested treatment. I don't know anyone who has had this done personally. What can I expect during recovery? Is it cruel? The vets suger-coat the answer.

I also visited a holistic vet. I have her on a new diet and vitamins. Will that help prolong her life at all? I have not been told holistic treatments would cure or prolong her life.

I am sorry. You sound intelligent enough to know that it is not natural to do this with a pet- or even humans oftentimes as the treatment is worse than the disease.
Just support your pet and be with her.

The cancerous tumor is a mast cell (not mass cell) tumor. The prognosis is hard to predict because some of these are very aggressive, some aren't. The usual treatment is surgery, to cut away the tumor plus a sizeable margin of healthy cells, and then follow up with radiation to mop up any remaining cancerous cells. Google "mast cell tumor dogs" and you will find some informative websites.

Radiation isn't cruel, and it will reduce the chance that the tumor will return, but it will probably be expensive, and I believe the dog needs to be under anesthesia during the procedure. I would do it for a youngish, otherwise healthy dog, but probably not for an elderly and ailing one.

Dunno about the holistic stuff. Some people swear by it, others think it's a scam, but in neither case does there seem to be much factual basis for their opinions.
