Is there anything I that can be done to alleviate throat problems due to radiation therapy?

My dad had oral cancer and recieved radiation to his neck and mouth. Now he has to eat through a tube because he cannot swallow anything. He continually has to spit because he can't even pass what little saliva he has. He doesn't have any problems breathing and he doesn't feel any pain when he attempts to swallow, but he just can't do it. When we asked the doctor, he said it was just a matter of time before my dad got better. That was nine months ago, and there's practically no improvement. Is there anything that can make the healing process go by faster, or is there a possibility that the damage to his throat is permanent? What kind of treatment could help open up his throat?

I recently went through a very similar procedure, and had the same side effects. Deeply burned throat, and inability to swallow, and then ultimately had mucositis which is a nasty ropey mucous that comes up through your throat.

The best advice for him is that he should only attempt to swallow things if it is easy. This could include ice chips (made from distilled water), it will slowly wet his throat without the strain of a mass of liquid going down.

I was also taught to do mouth/jaw exercises so that my jaws didn't atrohphy too much from not chewing food.

The good news is i stopped eating food and drinking through my mouth for almost 3 months. I had a gtube put in my stomach, and it worked wonderss. Now I am able to drink and eat through my mouth with just a bit of discomfort, and my taste buds are slowly coming back.

The damange to his throat is not permanent, he just needs to slowly regain his strength. Just be patient with him, everyone heals on a differnet basis. Also if the mucositis gets worse, there are sucking machines you can rent that liteally suck the mucous out with a use of a high suction tube you just put in your mouth. They rent for 15 bucks a month, and help a ton.

Wish you and your family the best!

If your dad is currently receiving radiation therapy to his throat, he has a very good reason to not be able to swallow. I would ask for your dad to obtain a referral to your hospitals speech and language therapy department. 9 months is an awfully long time to go without being able to swallow.

My friend had the same thing happen. She went to a doctor who literally stretched her throat. She had that done 3 times I think She is doing great know. Hope this helps.
