How can i have my teeth restored after radiation therapy has ruined my teeth? |
How can i have my teeth restored after radiation therapy has ruined my teeth? This question cannot be answered without more details, or an explanation of what you mean by ruined, do you mean decayed? extracted? discolored? painful? can you give more details? I would think a cosmetic dentist would be able to determine the best route. If some of your teeth end up having to be removed, you can opt for implants. I have an implant. The implant process is surgically putting in a screw and toping that with a post. Then your crown attaches to the post. You can take a look at the link below. The entire process for me was nearly 5 months. The reason it takes so long is because you have to wait for the screw to heal before you get your tooth in. speak to your dentist or a GP Your general dentist will coordinate with an oral surgeon. Implants is only one option. Speak to your dentist. If you've had radiation therapy to the head and neck area, it is possible that the salivary glands were affected leading to xerostomia (dry mouth) which can leave you with a lot of tooth decay. You should see your dentist to see what options you have. The sooner the better since with each passing day the problem only gets worse. There is some controversy regarding placing implants in irradiated bone due to something called ORN (osteoradionecrosis) which might cause the implant to fail. Usually before radiation therapy to the head/neck, you need to see a dentist to prep you for what might happen and make sure that any teeth that need to be extracted occurs before therapy and to give you products that might help with the dry mouth e.g Biotene. Anyway, see a dentist asap as your options may be a little more limited. Hope the rest of your health has gotten better though ;-) |
