Why are patients taking antibiotics advised to avoid prolonged sun exposure?

I've taken various antibiotics over the past few years, and this warning is always on the pill bottles.
What effects do these drugs have on the skin to make it more vulnerable to UV radiation?

Some antibiotics will make you more prone to sunburn. Antibiotics aren't the only ones. Some antiseizure medications will have the same effect. There are many others.

If the label on the bottle says avoid exposure to sun, listen to it. Use a high SPF sunscreen (50 or higher). Keep sun exposure limited to short time spans.

You will save yourself a lot of pain...from a moderate to severe sunburn.
