Grandmother lived in Hiroshima, she has cancer, is it in DNA?

During WWII my girlfriend's grandmother was living in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb was dropped. She lived, but now she has cancer. After she left Japan and moved to the US she had my girlfriend's mom, and my girlfriend's mom had my girlfriend. She had no other risk factors for cancer, little sun, no alcohol, no smoking, no chemical exposure.

Does radiation from an atomic bomb mutate DNA or genes so that cancer is more likely in off spring of those who survived Hiroshima? Can an atomic bomb damage DNA and is that DNA able to be passed down generations.

The DNA in your girlfriend's grandmother was probably damaged and is the most likely cause of the cancer, however, it would not necissarly cause mutations in her reproductive organs, and if your girlfriends mother has no increased risk of cancer, than you can be almost sure that your girlfriend, being a 3rd generation, will not have any increased risk of cancer from the blast at hiroshima.

exposure to radation could have caused her cancer, if that is the case, then your GF is not at risk. Exposure to radtion could have caused a gene mutation, if that is the case, she may have something to be concerned about.
