Rabies examination Meanings?

My friend was bitten by a sick 8 months old dog, after that the dog dies and they decided to cut the head of the dog for rabies examination.
Results are: Direct microscopic Examination (DME) negative
Fluorescence Antibody Test (FAT) Positive for FA test
Diagnosis: Rabies Positive

Now she's taking the vaccine started today, and on jan. 14,18. feb 11and the last one is on april 11. The vaccine is Verorab!

On the direct microscopic examination, an experienced pathologist looks for changes in the brain that signifiy rabies. The most common chane is called the "Negri" body which is a cell infected with virus. A much more sensitive test (i.e. can detect a smaller amount of virus) is the fluorescent antibody test where a special antibody to the rabies virus is added to the brain tissue and will glow (emit light) when looked at with a special microscope. Very small amounts of virus can be detected this way. This test was positive and indicates the animal was infected with the virus.

If treatment of a bitten person is started before the symptoms of illness, prevention is assured. As previously noted, once symptoms start, the disease is fatal. Treatment consists of providing rabies immune globulin (RIG) on day one (this gives immediate immunity), then a course of rabies vaccine (which makes the person produce his own antibodies).

The cloxacillin was probably given to treat a bacterial infection at the site of the dog bite or to prevent such an infection. It would not be my antibiotic of choice for an animal bite but I would recommend you finish the course as directed.

Good luck!

The tests on the dog show that it had rabies, but it had only recently been infected. This result means that your friend could have been infected by rabies. Doctors treat people for rabies whenever it is even remotely possible to get rabies from a bite. The rabies vaccine prevents rabies from developing. If a person doesn't get the vaccine and symptoms of rabies occur, there is no treatment, and the outcome is fatal. With the vaccine, rabies causes no problems.
