Can you get rabies from eating a thouroughly cooked squirrel that had rabies?

i want to know because i am going to go squirrel hunting and i am afraid that if i get a squirrel that has rabies, cook it, and then eat it if i will or possibly can get rabies?

ummmmmmmmm, i hope not. good luck with that

Wow....such a hard question.

Don't. Eat. The. Squirrel.

That sounds so gross to eat a squirell, its right up there with eating rats.

yes

We live in Alabama, REDNECK COUNTRY!, and eat squirrel with just about every meal...I don't have rabies yet, and no one in my family does...so I mean...I think it would be safe...I've eaten squirrel since I was born...about 18 years

Rabies is a viral infection and all viruses are killed during cooking.

Now getting it from having contact with the blood or saliva is a totally different subject.

I grew up in hillbilly country MO and I have killed dressed and eaten a lot of squirrels in my day and I have not nor have I ever known or heard of anyone that has gotten rabies from killing and eating them.

Look dear, rabies is a disease of contact infection.
Bite of rapid animal is the usual mode of infection,&lick ocassionally.
Though man to man infection has not been reported ,the virus in saliva of the case is a potential risk exposing contacts to infection if saliva droplets or spray contaminate the skin accidently& the virus finds entry through abrasions.
& so, your caution must be at 1st during huntung you have to wear protective cloth allover ,I don't know if a squirell is able to bite or not,but for sure he can lick at least..
And so,be very very careful as you know rabies is invariably fatal[100% case fatality]& if you are sure an animal has rabies ,don't ever try even to get near it.
