Can a person get rabies from a dog that has been vaccinated against rabies?

My fiance was bitten tonight by a German Shepard, and the girl said that he had been vaccinated in January. He called the vet that she said gave him the vaccination and he said that since the dog was vaccinated, there is only a minimal chance of him contracting rabies. What does that mean? Can he still get rabies?

Very unlikely--first the dog was already vaccinated. Second, the dog would have to have rabies to spread it. A vet will never give a definite guarantee (legal purposes)./ I'm sure your fiance is just fine--to ease his mind he could see his doctor to be sure.

yes, its like getting the flu after getting the flu shot.

odds are like 1 to 5% BUT get him to a DR asap you don't have much time for a cure

from my unserstanding most dogs get their rabies vaccine every 6 months, this reduces the dog's chances of getting the rabies virus.

what's more important was the circumstance or the state the dog was in when he bit your fiance, was the bite provoked or not , was the dog drooling all over, etc. when in doubt, and just to be on the safe side you should have your fiance immediately vaccinated with rabies vaccine at your local health center.

Another important advice : you should monitor the dog's condition for the next 14 days, if the dog is well and alive after 14 days, most likely he does'nt have the rabies and most likely did not transmit any rabies vaccine, but during the waiting period, you should already have received the rabies vaccine 3rd or 4th dose.

very rarely after all these precaution, that the person bitten may still harbor a latent type of rabies virus and may manifest many years after, but these are isolated cases, so just PRAY .
