Rabies?...I just may be freaking out!?

So saturday morning I woke to a bang. so I thought oh god what has my cat gotten into now? I walked out of my bedrrom door and saw a racoon in my apt. (sliding doors were cracked open a lil bit) with my cat, they werent fighting, just kidda looking at each other. The racoon went to the bathroom near the kitty litter, ate some bread that we left out on the counter, knocked over a lid of a pot that was on the stove (which is what I think I heard) and ate my cats food.. Im pretty sure I would hear if my cat and racoon was fighting, it was like 10 to 9am but still pretty dark out b/c of the rain, so when the racoon saw me it went back outside and fell asleep in the corner of my deck, I think b/c it was drier then being on the ground plus it was morning. Question is even though i checked my cat for any bites and she seems fine, and i threw out her old food dish and bought a brand new one... is there any way of my cat or me or my husband getting rabies... if of course the racoon had it?

It's okay to exhale now. The raccoon most likely didn't have rabies, just an appetite for catfood. Rabies is spread by saliva and blood contact with an infected animal- and a raccoon that walks into your kitchen and helps itself to breakfast doesn't sound like it was sick at all. You could have saved yourself the expense of the food dish- it's not spread that way. None of you are likely to catch anything but fleas. Now would be a good time to take kitty to the vet though, and have it given rabies shots. Then this won't be a scary scenario in the future at least for the kitty. It might also be a good idea to secure the sliding glass door in the future and not leave kitty food out overnight. Pet food is a particular favorite for raccoons, and it's one temptation that will bring them into contact with you if they get the chance. If you secure the outside garbage cans as well- you roll up the raccoon welcome mat. And you might call animal control to see if they can't help out with a few traps. But you, hubby and kitty should be just fine.

If the raccoon had rabies you would know. The only way that you could get it is if the raccoon bit you. Relax

You and your husband are safe from rabies, your cat would only contract rabies if the raccoon was showing symptoms of rabies which from your description it doesn't sound like it was showing signs. Still, to be on the safe side, you should take your cat to the vet and get's it's rabies shot. You need to do this even if the raccoon wasn't rabid because your cat could get outside on accident or on purpose and be exposed. The shots aren't that expensive and it's worth the piece of mind.

As long as the racoon didn't bite your family, or your cat (and you would know if it did) you should all be just fine. Though i do think you should let an animal warden from your area know about this because although when people think "rabies" they automatically think foaming at the mouth and aggression this is not always the case, any animal acting in anyway different than it should i.e. a wild animal acting tame (like the racoon sleeping on your porch) can be a sign, it's best to let the people trained in this know of your experience. So they can protect others from this fatal disease.

if the cat is vaccinated there are remote chances of it contracting Rabies from the raccoon and without direct contact with the raccoon your familly cannot contract Rabies.
