Can you get rabies from this? No one was bitten? |
If raccoons have been eating cat food from your porch and you go out to feed and water you cat...can you get rabies from handling it's foodbowls. I don't know for sure that these raccoons have rabies but I'm being cautious. My cat gets vaccinations so he's fine. No, you can't. no, to get rabies there needs to be an exchange of blood or saliva, or other bodily fluids I would put the cat food bowls up when ur cat is not eating. Extremely unlikely. Wash your hands after handling the bowls, and don't handle them if you have any injuries to your hands. ok, unless the racoon bit you causing a deep puncture wound you would not get rabies. It is an anaerobic virus, meaning it can't survive in an oxygen saturated environment. So unless the saliva of a rabies contaminated animal gets deep within your wound where there is no oxygen I say you are safe from having rabies. The saliva of an animal carrying rabies has to come in contact with an open wound for you to get infected. I'd be more concerned about your cat. A cat is no match for a raccoon and if there's a confrontation between your cat and a raccoon your cat will most likely be seriously injured or even killed. I would bring the cat and the cat food into a secure location at night. Leaving pet food out will attract raccoons and skunks. You don't want either frequenting where you live. I would be much more concerned about raccoon roundworm. It's a potentially deadly parasite that many raccoons carry. Make sure your wash your hands after touching anything that raccoons may have been messing with. The best thing is to discourage these animals from coming to your property. |
