Could I have Rabies? |
I have a 7 month yr old kitten. She exhibits no signs of rabies, but she bit me about 1 1/2 months ago. She is not vaccinated. Could I have rabies?? What should I do? I want to get her vaccinated ASAP!! But it's not really my cat...it's my sister's. But she doesn't take care of her!! So that's why she's not vaccinated yet. For starters, get your kitten vaccinated against rabies. No, you do not likely have rabies, certainly not if the kitten is still alive and well. If you had rabies, at this point there's not anything that could be done anyway. In the future, if you are bitten by an animal and either you know the animal has not been vaccinated or think it could have rabies, you need to go see the doctor then. For rabies serum to be effective,it needs to be given before you begin to develop symptoms or the disease can take hold. If you actually had been exposed to rabies that long ago, you would either already be dying of the disease or dead, and your kitten would have been dead as well. So at the moment you are safe- but that won't be true in the future unless you get the kitten vaccinated. And work on teaching your cat to behave, and not bite. Kitten bites are not too bad, full grown cat bites aren't funny. Teach her to behave now and you'll both be much happier in the future. If she had rabies and she bit you 1 1/2 months ago and you didn't go to the hospital you probably would've been dead by now...It's true,,, Unless your 7 month old kitten was bitten by an animal I highly doubt that you have rabies, especially since it was 1 and a half months ago. You would have begun to show signs by now, and unless you've been having bad headaches or malaise. I'm pretty sure you're fine. The chances are good that you don't. I believe you would have been showing signs by now. Do go get your kitties shots. She needs them. chances are unlikely. Cat's mouths contain a lot of jerms but yet are one of the most clean domesticated animals out there. If you got bit that long ago, then why do you ask now if you may have rabbies? Use poroxide and antibiotic cream if you think it's infected and start directing your energy to other things. If you had rabbies you would not be asking here that's for sure. You would be in the hospital or have already paid a visit to your family phasician. Not likely. First, if the bite shows signs of infection, see your doctor. Second, if the cat had rabies, it would be behaving strangely and dying a horrible death. Is it an outdoor cat? Third, for God's sake, take the animal to the vet for its shots and neutering! People have been known to live with rabies for up to two years with the first of symptoms taking as much as 12 weeks to develope. But just as everyone else has said. I don't think so either. A teenager where I am from got brushed in the face by a bat that had entered his room through an open window. He didn't think anything of it and was actually bitten by the bat and didn't feel the teeth enter his skin. He died about 3 and a half weeks later from rabies. So I'm pretty sure you are okay. Seeing as it has been over a month since the incident took place. Highly, highly unlikely. Only *one* human contracted rabies in the US in 2005. If it's been 1 1/2 months, your kitten would be showing signs of rabies (most likely death!) and so would you. (Rabid cats usually die within four to six days.) Furthermore, rabies in domestic animals, while a real threat, is pretty unlikely: 93% of reported rabies cases are in wild animals. If she had rabies, she would have died a horrible death by now. Get her to the vet and get her kitten series of shots started. This is extremely important for her health. u would probly be dead by now if u had it. |
