What does "End Stage" of pulmonary fibrosis mean?

My mom just had a lung biopsy and it revealed that she is in the end stage of pulmonary fibrosis. Does that mean she only has a few months to live? We already knew it was terminal, but I was wondering if anyone knew more about it.

There is a small chance she could live more then a year with medicine, but to me it sounds like it would me she is in the last Stage of the disease. My mother died from cancer brought on Smoking. Go to a Health site and look up what can be done medicine wise. I so sorry to hear about you mom sweetie. Take care

Love you yahoo friend. Send me a message anytime k?

end stage means that the disease has gone as far as it will go and I am sorry to say that may mean she may pass away soon.

It means that the disease has gone as far as it normally will in the person.

It does not mean that she would die soon, but it certainly means that she will have a very poor prognosis and she will die sooner than somebody identical to her without the disease would do.

I suggest you make the best time that she has remaining very precious. I know this is not what you will want to hear but be strong for each other and offer an ear and love.

I was diagnosed with "end stange" pulmonary fibrosis in March of 2003 and my doctors gave me less than 18 months to live. Well, I'm still here. If people are careful around her (no one with colds or flu anywhere near her), if she uses her supplemental oxygen, if she eats right, who knows? Doctors get a better idea when a disease progresses to a point where the other organs fail, but if only her lungs are affected at this point, it is hard to say.

One thing in her favor is the fact that she survived the biopsy. I am a little curious as to why a doctor would do a biopsy if he/she already knew she had pulmonary fibrosis. Since there is no cure, and no treatments other than a lung transplant, why did they feel the need to perform a biopsy? My doctors talked me into an open chest biopsy and in retrospect, I would never have agreed to it if I had known how difficult it was going to be to recover from it.

The best thing to do is take care of her and enjoy every last minute together. Don't dwell on how long you may or may not have with her, just focus on the present. Please consult these websites for additional information or if you need any kind of help at all. Good luck to all of you and who knows, she may just surprise everyone.
