Does pulmonary fibrosis constitute COPD?

Does pulmonary fibrosis constitute COPD?

I have pulmonary fibrosis and I can tell you that pulmonary fibrosis is not a side effect of COPD. It is a specific disease that kills over 50,000 people in the US alone every year. It is a restrictive disorder, not an obstructive disorder. The exact mechanism of the disease is unknown. In more than 50% of the cases, an actual cause is never determined, so it is referred to as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The disease usually begins with inflammation to the lung caused by some sort of lung injury (exposure to toxic gases, pneumonia, actual lung injury such as bruising) that later turns healthy lung tissue into scar tissue. The disease is often misdiagnosed and the number of people who actually die from it may be much higher. The only definitive way to diagnose the disease is through biopsy. There is no cure for pulmonary fibrosis and the average life span of most people after diagnosis is less than 5 years. It kills 100% of the people who get it. By the way, you can have COPD and pulmonary fibrosis at the same time, but make no mistake, they are two separate and different lung diseases. Hope that helps answer your question.

pulmonary firbrosis is one of the side effects of COPD.

My friend was agent orange and died from pulmonary fibrosis. What is COPD? I'm very curious.

COPD can have many diseases associated with it. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is what it stands for, Emphysema and Chronic Bronchitis are required for the diagnnosis but many other diseases can be a part

no fibrosis is a distinctly dieeferent type of lung diseaes..it causes "restriction" rather than C Obstructive PD..often caused by medicines, allergies and most commonly "idiopathic"...ie cause not known....
needs specialist treatment

CO PD...Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is made up of THREE things. Picture a triangle and all of these 3 make up the COPD TRIANGLE.
1. Emphysema
2. Chronic Bronchitis (Bronchitis at least 3 times a year, every year... constitutes "chronic bronchitis").
3. Asthma
Those 3 components make up COPD, you can have one, part of one or all 3. Pulmonary Fibrosis is NOT necessarily a "result' of COPD. Pulmonary Fibrosis is stiffening of the lungs, where as COPD is dying and destroying lung sacks.
Good luck, always get a second opinion, and have a blessed day. Angelface

COPD is Chronic OBSTRUCTIVE Pulmonary Disease. There are only 5 lung diseases that have obstructive characteristics. Emphysema, Chronic Bronchitis, Asthma, Bronchiectasis and Cystic Fibrosis.

COPD is usually 2 or more of the 5 obstructive disease with carbon monoxide retention and an FEV1/FVC ratio of less then 70%.

Pulmonary fibrosis is a restrictive lung disease. So to answer your question, no Plumonary fibrosis does not constitute COPD.
