My dad has Pulmonary Fibrosis, and his lung capacity is 32%,and oxygen is 85. Anyone know how bad that is?

My sisblings and I are just curious as to whether he has very long to live at this point. He was diagnosed with this disease one year ago.

His prognosis is quite grave. The worst thing about his condition is that it is irreversible...With such poor pulmonary function parameters it is questionable if providing oxygen by conventional methods (such as a nasal canula) would be sufficient to raise the amount of oxygen in his blood significantly; on the other hand providing oxygen under pressure and at high concentrations may be more detrimental than beneficial...

he should be on oxygen. if he isn't he needs to ask his dr about it because with that low blood oxygen, and such poor lung activity, he won't be around long without it, i'd think.
it isn't very promising, at any rate.

one cannot predict how long a patient with this disease will live. though the management is basically palliative, using steroids and oxygen, patients can live for five years and more after diagnosis. any inter-current infection, or continuation of smoking will shorten life. if he needs oxygen, it is cheaper in the long run to get an oxygen concentrator, which will use room air to deliver oxygen to him

Lungs are at 1/3 capacity and his blood O2 is 85. Meaning the blood cells which carry O2, 15 out of 100 do not. This is bad, and can only get worse, Ask the Dr but my guess is don't make plans to buy him Christmas presents this year... sorry, hope you have or can make peace with him and he with God.

If he uses oxygen and does not get a respiratory infection, he may be with you from several more months to a year or more. But the flu or a chest cold could be the end. Try to keep him away from others who are sick.

You may also want to talk to the doctor about hospice.

That is really bad. Sorry. His oxygen should be above 90% or 88% at the very lowest. Hope he has some oxygen.

if your dad has interstial pulmonary fibrosis i think he is doing pretty well. that is what i have had for 2 years and my i truely believe that someday i will overcome this.
if your dad has idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis then he has only a few months to live.
you need to find out from the doc if it is interstitial or ideopathic
interstitial is good and ideopathic is not good. hope this has been helpful for you and may God bless and keep your dad safe and healthy and happy....you just have got to think positively !!!!!
