I recently had a pulmonary embolism at age 24.?

Im on blood thinners. I have no children and plan to have a family someday. Can I still have children? Anyone know of any the assosicated risks, birth defects, ect...

Pulmonary embolism= blood clots in the lungs

It depends on what caused the Pulmonary Embolus (PE). Was it the oral contraceptive pill? Do you have a hypercoagulable state such as anticardiolipin antibody, leiden factor 5 deficiency or lupus?
There are some hypercoagulable states that are associated with increased risk of spontaneous abortions and stillbirths and represents a high risk in pregnancy and needs special attention from OB.
You may have to see a hematologist to determine the cause of the PE and get as much mdical information when you had the PE to the hematologist. From there you can plan your life as to the safest treatment in the long run. Sometimes these conditions can be difficult to diagnose and may require time

what did your doctor say? that's who you need to ask.

What was the cause of the emboli? You really need to talk to your doctor about these questions. Don't rely on answers you hear here.

Coumadin? Lovenox?

Don't worry too much. Unless you have some sort of clotting disorder, your doctor should wean you off bloodthinners, and there should be no long term complications that should keep you from having children or doing most of the things you like to do.

Your doctor will be the best source of answers for your particular situation, but I'd add that fully understanding what gave you the PE in the first place will help you figure out what risks you will face in the future.

I'm glad to hear you're ok. Your best bet is to talk to your OBGYN... Let him know the situation. I'm sure he'll consider you at high risk, but don't let that stop you. Your doctor know how to handle these types of situation.
