Are patients with pulmonary embolism allowed to mobilise?

Are patients with pulmonary embolism allowed to mobilise?

If you an on anticoagulant therapy already with your PE, then it's okay to do normal daily activity like driving, sitting, housework. Unless you have episodes of acute shortness of breath associated with it. There are many people walking around with a PE from a deep vein thrombosis who are not necessarily critical care patients.
However, if you have other medical conditions which may be affected by this (history of stroke, heart ischemia, emphysema) then you really need to check with your doctor about activity levels. Obviously you are going to be on warfarin (coumadin) therapy for months, so it would not be realistic to have you on bedrest for the entire time. Perhaps initially your doc may restrict you to light activity and/or bedrest. Obvious as well, vigorous physical exercise is out until your doc says its okay ( a few weeks or so).

Seriously, you've got to ask your doctor. I never thought about that. All the patients I've ever seen with PE are too critical to get out of bed, so the question never came up. PE can be deadly, so ask your doctor to answer this one.

patients with HISTORY of PE are encouraged to mobilize
patients with current PE should be under treatment, during this time, they r not advised to move alot
