Can a pulmonary embolism caused by the pill come back? even if i'm not on it?

provided that you have been placed on treatment with Warferin
( Coumadin ), the chance of your having further PE's is reduced.
You should cease smoking if you are a smoker ( increased risk
factor ), and talk other management plans through with your Dr.

Wow, your lucky to be alive. PE's are usually fairly deadly. Women on the pill are at a greater risk of strokes and PE's because of the effect of the hormones on blood clotting. In most cases this was because the hormone dosage was too high, but not always. The risk goes up if you sit a lot and are crossing your legs all the time, because you are at risk for a condition called deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Blood pools in the larger veins of the legs and can form a clot, which when a piece of it breaks off, creating an embolus, the first place it goes is the lungs. You may still be at risk if you have DVT, but that risk is lowered if you aren't on the pill any more. I hate to hand you a standard answer, but check back with your doc if you can.
