In bipolar disorder, why do people become psychotic when they are manic?

I know that if I don't take my meds, I become manic with a psychosis. Why?

I don't know, but that can happen with me, too.

There is no illness, no chemical imbalance, get off your meds, but stay away from people for a while, especially those you know. You're gonna go manic but let it fill its course. Run it out. You'll be allright.
Doctors always try to stop you... Report It

They dont know what happens down that road. I've done it, it works. Doctors are like the monkey who sees a fish, and says oh its gonna drown! and hangs it on a tree, oh, that's better.....They have not a clue what they are doing. Report It

When you take your medication, the medicine stabilizes you and fills in the gap of your chemical inbalance in your brain.
WIthout your medication you will become manic with your disorder because there is no medicine to help your chemical inbalance. It's best to stay on your medication with bipolar disorder to treat the disorder and to keep you from going manic all the time.

because our brains are on auto-pilot @ about 10x the speed that they're supposed to be

Whatever you do, do not go off your meds. The meds help to correct what is most likely a chemical imbalance of some sort. The fact that you slide into psychosis makes it especially important that you do everything you can to control your condition - you become a danger to yourself and others when you go off.

Because when one is manic, one loses all insight into his/her surroundings. Psychosis means that one loses touch with reality. This is why people with psychosis attack the police and wind up dead or locked up on numerous charges.

By asking this question, one gets the impression that little or no insight exists into your condition. Thanks to medication, insight gradually teturns but one has to remain compliant and inform the treatment team of any changes to status.

Do you take your meds? HAVE you become manic w/psychosis, or is that what your dr said would happen? I'm just curious. I lived with a bi-polar spouse who had manic episodes even with meds. So do yourself a favor, take your meds.

In the interview Dr. Richardson told of her own study in which a young schizophrenic patient, who refused conventional medication, was practically symptom free after only 2 months of taking Omega 3 supplements. Both doctors agreed that this was 'quite remarkable'.

If you don't take you meds.... you will go through withdrawls. The withdrawl symptoms will manifest themselves as a "bipolar episode".

Go off the meds slowly and you will be MUCH more healthy.
Get doctors out of your life. Do not let them control you or tell you what is in your head.
