My 16 year old son has been put on Risperdal and Lithium for a psychotic disorder?

He has put on over 2 stone in weight over a 3 week period now he is getting more paranoid about the weight and he says he is going to stop taking them. She is gettig very bloated looking.Does anyone knnow of any one who this has happened to or who are on theese tablets.

I meant he is getting very bloated excuse my spelling he is actuallly got scyzophrenia which i know I have spelt wrong too. But I think peolple will know what I mean.

hi, im sorry to hear of the situation your son is in, but weight gain is very common, its is one of the biggest side affects for someone on an antipsychiotic medication....

the only thing your son can do, is go on an exercise plan ans diet plan, go see your doctor or nurse with your son,and they will be able to refere you to to the dietician and be supportive of them and stress the importance of staying on the medication, he will be far iller if he comes off it......


the use of lithium in the 40`s was very hap hazzard and dangerous.... today it more controlled and watched over.... though if your child is young i agree that he should not be put on it as its side effects are bad.... there are many other types of medication that can be used in stead of lithium... ripiridol though is a great drug for young people experiencing psychosis for the first time....

I was put on lithium at age 16; nearly committed suicide. Have always felt the drug is dangerous; check with another doctor, IMMEDIATELY!!!! (I'm LATE 58S now, use medications with no adverse side affects).

You say your Son and then you say that SHE is getting very bloated.
Is it your Son or your Daughter??? Talk to THE DOCTOR about the problem, they may adjust the medication..

i was happened to be a patient of this serious killer disease called skhzhophernia called split personality?
It will ruin the life miserably. Like two person in one body each one get more power and spoil your health. Do recommend some healthy meditation practise so that better control or regulation of mind will happen.

Abviously something wrong. His body is unable to accept the medicines. Refer him to a different specialist for an independent advise.

I think your son is gaining weight faster than is healthy. And no, that is not normal for this drug, it usually causes a little weight gain and thirst. Please go back to your doctor and ask him or her to suggest another drug to use. If not, see if you can change your doctor. Can you discuss it with the psychiatric services too? I think it may be a good idea if he cut out refined sugar from his diet and took low fat options until you get this sorted, and also do some exercise every day if he is able. Good luck! Go on and make that fuss!

a side effect of course from the meds...tell him to talk to doctor about maybe changing the meds..or you might start going for a walk at night with him...take a nice long two or three mile walk to burn some calories and run the meds through his system better...It is just a sad side effect ....but so support to him by offering to go for a walk and tell him it will help keep the weight down...Pray for him...and I will pray for the both of you

I used to be on Risperdal and it didn't make me gain or loose any weight. Maybe it's the Lithium making him put on the weight but i'm not entirely sure sorry. Maybe go onto some websites about Risperdal and Lithium and see if gaining weight is a side affect of either of them.

I know those tablets very well. They do put on weight. Just tell your son to relax and to eat healthy.Combine exercise with diet food at he will lose weight. The efects are very small but very noticable.
Ask his doctor when can he start going off them.

Lithium???????? I thought that was for batteries.

yes i was on them for bipolar disorder and same thing happened I had to watch my diet and exercised regularly .It did settle down a bit after about 2months

I dont know where you are but I'm in Australia and i know that Lithium is very rarely prescribed anymore here ask your doc about alternatives

my daughter was on this meds.she had side effects also. she put on weight and she had a mini stroke because of the meds. she suffers from tourettes syndrome.
