What kind of treatments can you use to help alleviate phenylketonuria (pku)? |
What kind of treatments can you use to help alleviate phenylketonuria (pku)? The only way to 'alleviate' PKU is to strictly adhere to the diet plan provided by a specialized nutritionist. My daughter has PKU, and cannot tolerate any more PHE daily than is contained in one teaspoon of peanut butter. The student MD is partially correct in supplementing tyrosine. Protien consists of several amino acids, all of which the body needs to function normally. Phenylalenine, however, will build up phenylpyruvic acid that will attack the brain and nervous system. The body needs the rest to function normally. As a result, PKU patients need a dietary supplement, usually in the form of a powdered drink, to fortify the body with the remaining amino acids that the body doesn't get because the patient eats so little protien. The best interventions involve avoiding phenylalanine (ESPECIALLY if you're pregnant or may get pregnant) in the diet, and supplementing tyrosine. A dietician is the person to walk you through this. |
