How does Bordetella pertussis affect the peptide hormone response?

How does Bordetella pertussis affect the peptide hormone response?

Not sure about hormonal responses, because the pertussis toxin affects G-proteins more than free-floating hormones in the body. And it must also be known that Bordetella pertussis not only has the pertussis toxin, which initiates the whooping ("hooping") cough disease, but also has other toxins as well, such as dermatonecrotic toxin and adenylate cyclase toxin, among others.

The pertussis toxin is a protein composed for multiple subunits, and is usually in the A-B form because it is composed of the A and B subunits, with further subdivision below those two. The B subunit, if I'm not mistaken, only aids in the transport of the A subunit, which is the one concerned mainly for the toxic activity of the toxin itself; in essence, if you stop the cell-surface binding of the B subunit, you also stop the cellular transport of the A subunit. Much like the tuberculosis toxin and especially the diphtheria toxin, the pertussis toxin has got something to do with ADP-ribosylation of proteins. What pertussis toxin does is bind ADP-ribose to G-proteins in the cells (ADP-ribosylation of G-proteins).

As you may know, G-proteins function, among other functions, in regulating adenylate cyclase activity, which then regulates ion channels and the diffusion/transport of ions (like chloride ions and soidum ions) inside and outside the cell. ADP-ribosylation of G-proteins initiates a constantly activated G-protein, which then separates into the activated alpha- and beta-gamma subunits. Constant activation of these subunits also activates adenylate cyclase activity, and the regulation of ion gradients inside the cell, enabling the uncontrolled release of ions and other electrolytes and fluids out of the cell. This is the mechanism as to why there is profuse mucus and pulmonary fluid during episodes of constant coughing of an infected person.

Hope this helps!
