Personality disorders in the genes? |
Genetics and personality disorders: are we born with personality disorders in our genes or is our lives to blame for it? Are personality disorders the outcomes of inherited traits? Are they brought on by abusive and traumatizing upbringing? Or, maybe they are the sad results of the confluence of both? I'm sure doctors all over the world could debate this topic for years to come. I say there are certain genes that produce disorders and are passed from generation to generation. My family has a history of bi poplar, some of us have very mild cases and others are off the chart. Both are the culprits. I believe it's both - a predisposition (genes) that you are born with and then the circumstances in which you are raised. My ex-husband has borderline personality disorder and so does our oldest daughter (who is now 17). I believe that she was born with the gene which would predispose her to it, but also, she was raised seeing the way her father acts and having to deal with his irrational and compulsive behaviors, so maybe she picked up some ways of acting there too. In my reading about borderline personality disorder in particular, I find that that seems to be the concensus. Yes, it is hereditary to some degree. I'm bipolar and it runs heavily on my mom's side of the family. |
