Can major mental diseases (personality disorders, psychotic disorders) be passed to next generations genetacly

If any person and also his/her brother/sister have mental health problem ( personality order or psychotic disorders) but there son/daughter dont have any such problem, can it be possible that the mental disorders recurr to the thired generations ( ie to there grandchildren)?

Sure. Just like physical attributes that express by skipping a generation, mental attributes can also do the same. Genes affect your disposition for all kinds of health issues. Sometimes they skip a generation because the specific combination of genes wasn't expressed in the middle generation and instead lie dormant only to be passed on and re-expressed a generation later. Whether or not it expresses is really a matter of statistics. There is a chance it will get expressed and there is a chance it won't. Only rarely, when both parents have the same gene do the odds get stacked in favor of one chance or the other.

Well it generally has familial tendencies and can affect anyone related closely.

as far as i know whoever has the disease is a carrier of the trait. now it will end up somewhere in your family line at one point or another, but maybe not directly to the children of that person.

family disorders are tricky, it either pops up immediatey in the next generation ( that means everyone in the family) or there will be a generation gap of a few generations( or randomly).

but the tendency of heritage diease will be heighten only if both sides of the family have that strand of DNA.

yes it can, but other factors also can play a part in illness...like life events, enviromental factors, etc

i believe so thinking back to some things i have done my mom & dad did the same things. my 2 sis's have mental disorders and my daughter suffers from depression too and a few years ago she had to be hospitalized for it

Depending on the disorder/diagnosis, there is a genetic disposition.

I've studied mental health for a long time as I have a close relative with a brain illness, which is what mental disorders are, and I'm the caretaker so I have a special interest. The web site for NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) is the best resource I've ever found, but I've also gone to the library and checked out books and got books from the doctor's offices, and ordered brochures, and I never quit seeking what the latest research shows. You could study this for the next hundred years and you'll see that we actually know so little for so much progress to be made in other areas of our bodies. We've come a long way since 1988 when it was thought all serious mental disorders with psychotic features was always schizophrenia, which since 1988 it has been learned there's bipolar with psychotic features, but that isn't schizophrenia. So you have an interesting study in front of you. We should all know our heritage and the inherited genetic diseases of our families.

Yes, besides having a gentic disposition, there is learned coping skills. It can pass on for many generations until someone gets help and shows what to do to the younger generation.

It is proven that a child has a better chance of recovery if the parents have recovered.

As far as I know, mental illnesses are not automatically passed on but the children will have a predisposition to it. Something to do with genetic imprinting.
