Are multiple personality disorders and bipolar disorders the same? |
Are multiple personality disorders and bipolar disorders the same? No ! Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder, mood swings from extreme depression one week to extreme euphoria or mania the next week. Multple personality disorder is a disorder of identity also known as dissociative identity disorder, where the patient completely forgets his identity and takes up anothers identity and rarely multiple identities. its very well portrayed in the movie 'the primal scream'. Bipolar patients do not forget their identity. No. Multiple personality disorder is extremely rare, and may not even exist. Bipolar means someone who goes from an extreme of hyper-mania, can't sleep, to extreme depression, with sometimes normal periods in between, and is fairly common as mental illnesses go. No, they are not although I'm sure someone with multiple personality disorder could also have bipolar. Someone with bipolar can also be psychotic, but that is often a temporary situation. No they are not. Someone with bipolar disorder, also once referred to as manic depressive disorder - generally do not have multiple personalities, if they do they have both conditions. no the are different disorders but they often accompany each other, they each have their own course of treatment, and you can be rid of one but still have the other. Borderline personality disorder No, No, not in the slightest. Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder and it's actually quite common compared to other mental illnesses whereas multiple personality disorder is, in reality, quite rare. Technically, no, they are not, they are 2 very different disorders. However as an adult with Bipolar Disorder I can tell you that people with Bipolar often feel like there are two very different persons residing inside of them. My teenage daughter is also Bipolar and she says the same thing. At times we feel as though we are one person with certain things we like to do...etc and then when we spiral down and hit depression it seems as though we are someone else entirley. Dont know if this makes any sense or not, but Bipolar does make you feel like you have multiple personalitys at times. But, not like MPD does, you dont have names for your alter egos, and you dont have periods where you loose contact with one personality when the other one takes over...etc. Its just a feeling you get like you are two different people trapped in one body. no but they are similar |
