Are there any benefits of personality disorders?

disorders such as borderline, histrionic, schizoid, narcissistic

I think the biggest benefit of having a personality disorder is that it makes you more understanding towards other people's problems. You have a problem and you know what it's like, and I think it makes you more understanding and considerate and less judgemental towards other people who have problems, even if their problems are completely different.

As for the symptoms of personality disorders, a few of them might be a little beneficial, but they come with too much suffering and problems and I'm sure most people would rather be without them completely. For example, I'm obsessive-compulsive, and the only benefit of that disorder is that I never ever lose stuff because I check everything carefully, but I'd still rather be without this disorder, even if it meant sometimes losing things or forgetting to do something.

I have schizoid personality disorder too. I generally don't mind the symptoms myself and some of them seem beneficial to me, but the people around me might not agree. It all depends on how you look at it.

But in general, I'd say that personality disorders have few benefits and they're outweighted by the disadvantages and problems.

You're welcome. :) Report It

Thats why its called a "disorder"

Its not benificial

Those disabilities might increase someones will to correct themselves or better their life's. The true benefit of most illness' or disorders is that it gives us more of an understanding of the world and of the way we interact. Better and more variable perspectives help us to create a better more understanding world. SO having any of these disorders would subconsciously increase your variety of perspectives and the way you look at the world and the way the world looks back!

Yes, great laughs.

I think the only benefit (if you want to call it that) is that self-awareness can be heightened if you research the disorder and learn how to counteract the symptoms. ie. one of the characteristics of borderline personality disorder (which I have) is that one "lacks true empathy". Therefore I have had to learn how to empathize and how to behave more appropriately to situations. This has truly helped my relationships with people since learning how to do so.

pizazz ! haha...people with p.d are SPPPICCCCY !

nothing beneficial. i have borderline personality disorder apparently i do things that i don't realize I'm doing like huffing or shaking my head or saying certain things and i am always denying them and get into arguments with my hubby saying I'm lying so nothing beneficial here.
