Can you get incapacity benefit in the UK for personality disorders.?

I am currently on incapacity benefit for schizophrenia and depression as this is what I have been diagnosed as but I think I have borderline personality disorder rather than schizophrenia.

Yawn! - Fluffypinkthing, be original.

If you are currently receiving incapacity benefit it will not change if your diagnosis changes. The only way it would be stopped is if your GP signed you 'fit for work', which doesn't sound very likely.

I think you should definitely look at claiming DLA (Disability Living Allowance), as this will aid you financially. Certain premiums are available depending on the level you are awarded.

I suggest you find someone to support you with your application (which can be done on-line as well as by completing a form), as it helps if you know the criteria they use to assess people.

Citizens Advice Bureau usually have a worker who specialises in this kind of thing.

Mind is another charity that will offer support and advice. If you visit their website you can search to see if there is a local organisation in your area. The website offers a good source of easy to understand information, and this may also help you to get information on schizophrenia, depression and personality disorders.

Rethink are a charity that will also offer you help and advice if you contact them, they may also have a local branch that you could access.

If you think that your diagnosis isn't correct I would advise you to speak to your GP and also your psychiatrist, if you have one. They will be able to either confirm what you think or explain why they feel that their original diagnosis is more appropriate for you.

Ultimately the diagnosis doesn't always mean that much in the grand scheme of things. What is much more important is that you receive the treatment that best suits you. And you have a right to be consulted about what that is.

The charities I mentioned offer support workers who can help you deal with a whole range of things, DLA being just one of them. I strongly advise you to seek them out and see what they can offer.

Both can be accessed by self referral.

Ignore the people who have given unhelpful and silly comments as they are just people who do not understand about mental illness, probably due to ignorance and fear.

Mental illness is much more prevalent than most people realise. 1 in 4 people will suffer some form of mental illness during their lives - so just count up the silly answers and do you're own calculations!!

As for the answer given about working and paying taxes for years to pay for people with bogus illnesses I think the name says it all.................... And just hope that the person doesn't ever suffer and need to make a claim.

Does he/she realise that people who receive Incapacity Benefit (which is only payable to people who have worked) do not get the same financial support as anyone receiving Income Support. So people who have worked and find that they are not able to are actually penalised for this.

I personally believe that people who do not think that a mental illness is a real illness should spend a day in the shoes of a person who suffers, they will soon realise how much of a disability it can be and how it greatly impacts on every aspect of daily living.

Most job centres now have DEA's (Disability Employment Advisers) who can offer advice on how your disability affects your ability to work, they should also be able to help you with applying for DLA. Trust me, these people are not there to force anyone into unsuitable employment. I know that from personal experience.

Hope you check out the websites I've mentioned, and get yourself the help and support that you deserve.

Good luck and don't worry.

Which one of you?

Yes you can if it still Incapacitates you, ie; renders you incapable of work.

Yes , but it's a hell of a job to prove your case !!

i was on it for 2yrs with depression until i was found fit!! you should get it for depression and other dissorders, your doctor will know.

I know someone who has been diagnosed with paranoid Schizophrenia & depression and they are on Incapacity AND disability benefits.

you will still qualify for incapacity benefit, check out whether you can get disabled living allowance - if you have had your diagnosis for more than 6 months you should qualify though you may have to appeal the decision - you should definitely get the care component and possibly the mobility as well depending on how much help you need

Getting IB depends totally on whether you have paid your national insurence contributions. The best thing to do is to contact your local jobcentre plus office or you can call the disability benefits enquiry line (freefone- look in your phone book under jobcentre).

so long as the doc will give you a sick note you will be able to get inc benefit although schizophrenia does sound really bad there is different levels of it and not every one hears voices etc.. believing your dreams is a form of this milder cases normally come right with the right medication i would not be worried about your inc benefit as your doctor will know when you are ready to face work again

hmm well genrally incapacity benfit I think means mpeople who are incapicitated due to an injusry physiocal injusry or illness whoa re physically unable to work you need to contact the DWP fro advice on this

If you are getting benefits why would you want to change your own diagnosis? I realise there is some stigma involved in being schizophrenic - having lived with said stigma and the butt of peoples hilarity all my life - but if it's all in place why change it.
Anyway, the answer to your original question is yes you can but you'd have a long haul to prove it and questions would be raised by the DHSS.
