in detain - a soft tube called a catheter is inserted into your abdomen anda cleansing solution (dialysis solutionn) is sent in through a drip system (bag on a pole style). the abdomen is lined with Peritoneam membrane which allows waste product and excess fluid to difus into the solution from the blood. the solution is a sugar called dextrose (pulls fluid and waste to the solution) the waste and fluid is drained and disposed of. the process of filling up and draining takes 30 to 40 mins and is called exchange.
