Periodontal disease and braces???

Do braces really help if you have periodontal disease or is it just a way to get more money out of me from my dentist. I just found out today I have PD and I need to know know what the best choices are and if that kind of money is worth it.

I am inclined to agree with Matt, but it's not cut and dry. First of all, you NEED to be sure that the perio is under control for braces to be successful. Not knowing all the particulars of your situation, let me guess that you have some crowding. The goal for braces would be to put your teeth in the proper relation with each other so that there is adequate room betweenthe teeth for healthy gums to live. I have seen a couple of patients in the past 30 years who were treated for periodontal disease AND had ortho at the same time, in order to correct the crowding that was contributing to the perio problems.

I never had any problems with my teeth until I had braces. Now all the teeth that the bands were on, the teeth are rotting from the inside out (but I've taken care of them and had them fixed). I was also told a few months ago that I had begining stages of periodontal disease and they were goign to take care of it w/ a procedure called scaling. Haven't had it done yet but I am pretty sure PD is when the bone in your mouth starts to pull away or erode/decay and I do not see how braces could fix that. Not with all the strain your mouth goes through while having braces. But I'm not a dentist and this is just my opinion but personally - I would look into it more before deciding.

This is very strange question. Braces would make PD worse if the PD isn't under control. PD is a slow disease, and if you've been regularly attending a dentist for checkups, it shouldn't be something you "...just found out today..."
AFTER the PD is controlled, then braces MAY help realign your teeth if they are very crooked so that they can be more easily cleaned and maintained. However, if you have been properly instructed in maintaining your hygiene and you are fastidious, then even crooked teeth can be kept free of PD without the need for braces. Personally, I've never seen a PD patient have braces - PD mostly affects older people over 30yo.
So much of this depends upon the severity of your PD, your level of personal hygiene, other risk factors (e.g. smoking), the end result after PD treatment, etc. Is the PD treatment being performed by a specialist? Is the ortho going to be performed by a specialist?
You should get a second or third opinion, and gather as much info as possible so you can make a better decision. Without seeing your oral condition, I am making a lot of assumptions here.

I am thinking that maybe the braces are being suggested to hold loose or loosening teeth in your mouth for the time being??? rather than straighten them???? I suggest you get a product that I am using that has turned my mouth around in just a couple of months with noticable improvement almost immediately! I had deep pockets, and 2 loose teeth caused by gum infection which has been eliminated with this product. I took antibiotics 2 years ago because of gum infection and ended up with a yeast nfection - not fun. Anyway, I would totally recommend this product before you do anything else. It is truly amazing. I will never be without it. Because it is a liquid it will get deep into the pockets surrounding your teeth, is natural and turns around your mouth's environment..
