Periodontal Disease Information?

I'm fifteen and went to the dentist today and was told that I have periodontal disease in my mouth. The dentist told me I need to have a deep cleaning done, or I could be without teeth by the time I'm 25 years old. He said that he wasn't going to do it due to the fact I'm so young and recommended that I see a specialist. My parents are going to take me to a specialist withtin the next few days. My question is will this "deep cleaning" be painful? And what is exactly done? IS THIS CONDITION COMMON?

A deep cleaning is called a scaling and root planing. Normally 2 quadrants of your mouth are done at the same time..upper right and lower right...and then you go back again for the other side. The dentist will numb both quadrants with a local anesthetic which is typically the most 'painful' part of the whole process. You won't feel anything while the cleaning is being done. The dentist is going to use an ultrasonic scaler to remove calculus which has built up under the gumline.--BRUSH YOUR TEETH AND FLOSS REGULARLY TO PREVENT THINGS FROM GETTING WORSE!

The next few days you may experience some soreness but nothing you can't handle. Pain medication is usually not prescribed for this procedure. You'll be fine.

Lots of people have periodontal disease and depending on how long it takes you to treat it, things can get lots worse than where you are right now. It can lead you to bone loss which will cause you to lose teeth.

Good luck, you're doing the right thing by seeing a specialist.

I had that done. They don't do your whole mouth at once. It will take a few visits. (Personally, I think it is just a way to get more money from you.) No, it doesn't hurt. They numb you first. Just relax when they give you the shot to numb you. It doesn't really hurt.
