How is periodontal disease detected if not by x-rays. My dentist told me my gums are fine not red.?

Have pain on left side of jaw. have bad taste. sometimes giving me heartburn. Coul i have periodontal disease without having red and swollen gums.

HI,
PERIODONTAL DISEASE CAN BE DETECTED BY DOING GUM MEASUREMENTS. YOUR DENTIST HAS TO TAKE AN X-RAY OF THE AREA THAT IS CAUSING YOU PAIN. IF HE DID NOT, HE JUST LOOKED AND SENT YOU ON YOUR WAY, THAT WAS BAD DENTAL CARE!!! FIND YOURSELF A DIFFERENT DENTIST. YOU COULD HAVE A FRACTURED TOOTH, TOOTH DECAY IN BETWEEN TEETH... PROBLEMS THAT NEED AND X-RAY. GOOD LUCK

unlikely.

Dentists and hygenists can tell by looking at the gums and checking the depth of tooth-gum contact if there is a serious gum issue.

Probably something else if the dentist says your gums are okay.

Periodontal disease is measured by a dental tool. The tool measures the "gum pockets." A healthy mouth has a range of 1 to 3. Any number greater than 4 determines that you have periodontal disease. Most dental offices perform such a test during your dental cleaning. Additionally, a cancer test (of the mouth) is common for a dentist to perform.

I use to work for a dentist and a periodontal exam and cancer test (of the mouth) was standard part of a cleaning exam.

I hope that this helps you!

Make sure that you floss regularly. That can help the bad taste. Also, talk to your PCP to rule out gastrointestinal problems.

You may have an abcess, an infection, at the root tip of a tooth. It can cause pain and a bad taste because it is pus. This usually requires a root canal on the infected tooth.
