Recommended toothbrush for periodontal disease?

I have periodontal disease. I'm looking at getting a new toothbrush and was wondering what toothbrush do you all recommend?

Also was wondering about the Sonicare toothbrush, if it's good and worth it?

It really isn't the toothbrush but how you use it that really matters. Every time you brush your teeth you should make a real effort to ensure that you get the toothbrush bristles right down to the gum line to remove all the build up of plaque and debris.

The Cochrane Collaboration (an independant research organization) did a review of all the studies on powered toothbrushes and concluded that the most effective brush was an oscillating rotating brush (basically the Oral B) The Triumph is the top of the line at $180 ish the Vitality is the cheapest version ($25 ish) they both use all the same brush heads. If you go the Oral B website under patient education there is a nice video of how to brush effectively.

If you aren't sure you will like using an electric brush start out with the Vitality and then invest in one of the more expensive ones later on. I feel really guilty if a patient buys an expensive brush and then decides that they don't like using it.

FYI I personally find that sonic brushes tickle too much and I don't see such good results in plaque removal with my patients.

The Sonicare brush really doesn't do any better than a manual. I had owned one, and it would make me gag when I would brush my tongue. As far as a toothbrush for perio disease, just as long as its a soft bristle brush, but you may want to get a sulcus brush..use that after you brush your teeth. You can find that at pretty much any store where you can buy a toothbrush.

I have found that after doing over 20 years of periodontal treatment in my office, the Rota-dent brush by Prodentec is the finest instrument for keeping periodontal disease under control.

It works on the same rotary principle that the hygienist uses when polishing your teeth. It also has very soft, sable bristles that can go below the gumline to stimulate gum tissue and clean the plaque.

It also has a lifetime (yes - lifetime) warranty.

My patients (and myself and family) love it!
