Any cure for periodontal disease? |
Any cure for periodontal disease? Try using a high-quality electronic toothbrush (such as Oral-B Triumph). It greatly improves the health of the gums. A little expensive, but well worth the money. The answer depends on a lot of variables which you haven't provided. But I'll say this. I have mid progress periodontal disease. Over my last 2 exams, my worst spots have improved by two on their gauge. (Before I had some 7s, now 5s were my highest pocket depth; ideal is all 3s.) These improved because 1) I was religious in my regimen of brushing, flossing and using listerine and 2) the exam before last, they treated my gums locally with antibiotics. This is a fairly new routine, but it seems to have killed out a lot of the under-gum bacteria and given me a head start on my regimen. Like Martino, I also have periodontal problems. I just had a deep scaling (a more agressive form of a dental hygenist cleaning your deeth) and am scheduled for osseous surgery. Between the two, I shouldn't have any more problems if I follow a good regimen of dental maintenance. Floss twice a day, brush at least three times a day with a mechancial brush like Crest or Oral-B pulsar, and use Scope or Listerine mouthwash before brushing I am sorry, but there is no cure for periodontal disease. Once you have it, you will always have it to a degree. You can maintain it and in some cases improve it, but you always will have it. Most dentists treat this disease with deep scaling and antibiotic therapy, such as Arestin or Periochip. This however just maintians the bone and tissue, but doesn't improve it. There is a new laser that can be used to sterilize the pockets and regenerate bone. Only a small handfull of dentists in the US have one, so you would have to ask for it specifically. Don't be fooled by dentists claiming that they have a laser that does the same as this laser, which is called PerioLase, because if they say that they are full of it. There is nothing like this laser, in any way or form. |
