What is the frequency for root planning for periodontal disease? |
I was diagnosed with PD and had root planning done, one session with the dentist for each quadrant in the mouth. Due to PD, I have gaps between the teeth due to receeding gums. Definition of periodontal disease: Each tooth has six pockets that surround it, a normal reading of these pockets is 1-3mm, if someone does not have a cleaning in a long time, or has poor dental hygiene tarter and calculas can build up in these pockets below the gumline and cause the pockets to become deeper and have a reading of 4mm+. Which causes an infection in the gums and the infection causes boneloss, which will eventually cause the gums to receed and teeth to fall out.(Periodontal disease has been found to be directly linked to heart disease also) I used to have it done twice a year, opposite the dentist. So there were 4 cleanings a year. Two at the perio, two at the dentist. A. IT CAN BE AS LITTLE AS 4 WEEKLY FOR 3 VISITS IF VERY SEVERE OR CAN BE 8 WEEKLY FOR 3 VISITIS OR EVEN 6 MONTHS. AS I SAID IT DEPENDS ON THE SEVERITY OF THE DISEASE. This problem with periodontal disease is not well understood by dentists. I know they are supposed to know about these things, but they are taking advice from drug companies that are doing research to sell the dentists drugs. |
