At optimum levels, alcohol increases appitite and is said to stimulate the secretion of gastric fluids that aids in digestion.
People suffering from peptic ulcer have problems with their gastric mucosa (it prevents the stomach-acid from burning the stomach lining) and alcohol further detoriates this condition by disturbing this protective layer. This exacerbates the existing ulceration.
