Difference between gastritis and peptic ulcer?

Gastritis means that there is inflammation of the lining of the stomach. In order to make the diagnosis, a biopsy is necessary. Even gastroenterologists infrequently make the mistake of calling something they see gastritis without evidence of gastritis on biopsies.

Gastritis can have several causes. It can be due to infection with Helicobacter pylori, it can be due to an autoimmune process, and due to chemical irritation of the stomach lining. It can also be acute or chronic.

Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) indicates that the stomach (or duodenal) lining has broken down and a mucosal defect has developed, i.e. an ulcer. PUD can develop on a background of gastritis. Gastritis per se does not mean that there is a mucosal defect.

well peptic ulcer could be a sequel to untreated and chronic affection with gastritis and it is severer ( it is like u have got a hole in ur stomach )but believe me now days every thing is treatable or at least controllable
peptic ulcer could be a result of contracting helicobacter pylori bacteria , while gastritis may results from eatin so much spicy food or filthy food .....etc
