Hello, What are peptic ulcers?

How do they come about, what is the cause, what is its treament?

Peptic ulcers are open sores that develop on the inside lining of your stomach, upper small intestine or esophagus. The most common symptom of a peptic ulcer is pain.

Not long ago, the common belief was that peptic ulcers were a result of lifestyle. Doctors now know that a bacterial infection or some medications 鈥?not stress or diet 鈥?cause most ulcers of the stomach and upper part of the small intestine (duodenum). Esophageal ulcers also may occur and are typically associated with the reflux of stomach acid.

You can be treated with a proton pump inhibitor like Previcid, Protonix, Nexium. These meds will inhibit the production of the gastric acids and then the ulcer will be able to heal instead of getting worse. I believe Previcid is the only med that actually has healing properties.

I had a very large peptic ulcer and severe pain and have been on meds for about a year. No pain now. The med works in about two weeks.

Damages in the gastric mucosa or mucosa of the duodenum. It is caused by multiple factors - acid, Helicobacter pylori, medication ... It is treated by drugs that inhibit the proton pump, and treatment is very successful But it is important to diagnose the disease rigth (usually via endoscopy). If you already have the diagnose, then the medication will do the rest.

An ulcer is a sore, which means it's an open, painful wound. Peptic ulcers are ulcers that form in the stomach or the upper part of the small intestine, called the duodenum. Although stress and certain foods may aggravate an ulcer, most ulcers are caused by an H. pylori infection or the use of common nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen.he good news is that most H. pylori-related ulcers are curable with treatment that combines two different kinds of antibiotics and an acid suppressor. The medication is taken over a 1- to 2-week period. The ulcer may take 8 weeks to heal, but the pain usually goes away after a few days or a week. To be sure the treatment has worked, doctors may do a follow-up endoscopy 6 to 12 months later to check for H. pylori.

Likewise, ulcers related to NSAIDs rarely require surgery and usually improve with an acid suppressor and stopping or changing the NSAID. No antibiotics are needed to treat this type of ulcer.
