Pelvic exam...?

I'm supposed to go to my G.P for a pelvic examination, but I'm not sure what this involves & I'm quite nervous! I'm 24 and also I'm supposed to go for my first smear test. Can anyone tell me if a pelvic exam is like a smear test? I'm a little nervous about going!

well, you will be asked questions about your sexual and medical history. You will have your weight, height and blood pressure taken, then you will be asked to remove all your clothes and cover with a gown. Then the Doctor will come in to talk with you. Then you will be ask to lie down with your arms over your head for your breast exam. After that, you will be asked to scoot all the way down to the end of the table, with your feet in little stirrups.Don't worry, it isn't as bad as it sounds. The doctor will then feel your tummy for anything out of the ordinary. The pelvic will take place after that. The doctor will insert a little metal thing called a speculum..it feels funny, but please try to relax . It shouldn't hurt. If it does, say something to the doctor, and she can change it. Then, she will use a wand and brush to scrap some cells from your cervix. No big deal. She will also take some samples of your vagina as well as some other inside samples for STD's these don't hurt,. After all that, she will insert a finger into your vagina and push on your tummy so she can feel your ovaries. To check for abnormaties.
All this will probably take less than 4 minutes.
The biggest things to remember is to try really hard to relax, keep your butt on the table and don't worry ! She has done this hundreds of times before, and if she is any good, she will keep you talking all through it. Remind them this is your first time, it will remind THEM to be more gentle.
Good luck and please, don't worry !!!

A pap smear is done during a pelvic exam.
See site for more info:

This is never any fun but something us women must do yearly!

Your gynecologist will insert a vaginal speculum so she/he can see inside to make sure there isn't anything visually abnormal. Then they will swab the inside of your cervix to look for abnormalities on a cellular level. (this is the smear test).

Usually the whole procedure is quick and not as bad as you imagine. The hardest part is baring yourself to a complete stranger!

Good Luck!

With a pelic exam the doctor will usually insert 2 (gloved) fingers into your vagina and press on you abdomen, for a smear test the will insert an object a bit bigger to have a look inside and to take the smear test. Its just a little bit uncomfortable but it doesnt hurt at all.
Dont be too nervous, most doctors do several of these a day, but having a female doctor can put your mind at ease a little bit more sometimes!
Good Luck!

A "Well Woman" Exam includes a pap smear. The doctor will insert a small instrument.. likely a long Q-tip or other type thing into your vagina and scrape a small amount of tissue. Its more uncomfortable becauses of the tool they use to open it up. Its not painful at all...more just embarrasing.
They'll lightly press around on your lower abdomen and feel around. That tickles more than anything.
It all takes just a few minutes... once they actually get started. The hardest part is waiting around in the paper robe, sitting ...waiting with no underwear on... just waiting while your mind conjers up all sorts of horrors.
But, really, its not....or should not be painful. Just uncomfortable for a short time.
When you go for a mamogram... its like a big honkin SUV runs over and PARKS on your boobs. That hurts like a SOB.
But, actually it doesn't last as long as it feels like.
Good Luck... Prayers that all is well.

They are NOT the same. But the pap-smear will be done at the same time. During a pelvic exam...the doc examines the outter areas as well as looking inside using a speculum...then he will insert a longgggggg looking cotton swab inside..and rub it on the cervic. That is the pap smear part. After he removes the speculum..then he will insert 2 fingers to feel for placement of the uterus..and the ovaries. Thats all there is too it. It may be slightly uncomfortable. You may become embarrassed. Try to relax, and breath and find something in the room to concentrate on. It only takes a couple of minutes. Also you may experience so slight spotting afterwards..which is completely normal.
Just remember this.....doctors see women everyday for pelvic exams and pap tests....they dont think nothing of it. Plus you will have many many exams in your life time. It is just a couple minutes out of your life..and the end result could end up saving your life. Well worth a few minutes of being embarrassed.
P.S....Once you have had a baby..you will think a pap smear is a walk in the park..lol

With a pelvic exam, it is the same thing as a Pap Smear. You can go to your GP or an OB/GYN to do it. It doesn't matter they all do them. All females are different, I go to OB/GYN because I work side by side with all my GPs.
What the test involves is they will do a breast exam, they will insert a speculum, (it doesn't hurt, just little uncomfortable) they will get sample from your cervix to test for cervical cancer. Some providers will also get another sample for a Chlamydia test.

The following isn't a bad site:

Also if you want any birth control that is the time to tell the doctor. They normally only give 1 year supply so you get your pap done annually

There is nothing whatsoever to be nervous about. A pelvic exam can be either external, where the dr feels your tummy or internal where they feel inside through your vagina but there's nothing to worry about, it's a little bit uncomfortable but the more you worry the worse that is. A smear test is not a pelvic exam- during a smear test your dr will use a speculum so they can take a little scraping of the cells of your cervix, which again can be a bit uncomfortable but not if you relax. It's normal to have a pelvic exam at the same time as a smear.
