Pelvic exam...? |
I'm supposed to go to my G.P for a pelvic examination, but I'm not sure what this involves & I'm quite nervous! I'm 24 and also I'm supposed to go for my first smear test. Can anyone tell me if a pelvic exam is like a smear test? I'm a little nervous about going! well, you will be asked questions about your sexual and medical history. You will have your weight, height and blood pressure taken, then you will be asked to remove all your clothes and cover with a gown. Then the Doctor will come in to talk with you. Then you will be ask to lie down with your arms over your head for your breast exam. After that, you will be asked to scoot all the way down to the end of the table, with your feet in little stirrups.Don't worry, it isn't as bad as it sounds. The doctor will then feel your tummy for anything out of the ordinary. The pelvic will take place after that. The doctor will insert a little metal thing called a speculum..it feels funny, but please try to relax . It shouldn't hurt. If it does, say something to the doctor, and she can change it. Then, she will use a wand and brush to scrap some cells from your cervix. No big deal. She will also take some samples of your vagina as well as some other inside samples for STD's these don't hurt,. After all that, she will insert a finger into your vagina and push on your tummy so she can feel your ovaries. To check for abnormaties. A pap smear is done during a pelvic exam. This is never any fun but something us women must do yearly! With a pelic exam the doctor will usually insert 2 (gloved) fingers into your vagina and press on you abdomen, for a smear test the will insert an object a bit bigger to have a look inside and to take the smear test. Its just a little bit uncomfortable but it doesnt hurt at all. A "Well Woman" Exam includes a pap smear. The doctor will insert a small instrument.. likely a long Q-tip or other type thing into your vagina and scrape a small amount of tissue. Its more uncomfortable becauses of the tool they use to open it up. Its not painful at all...more just embarrasing. They are NOT the same. But the pap-smear will be done at the same time. During a pelvic exam...the doc examines the outter areas as well as looking inside using a speculum...then he will insert a longgggggg looking cotton swab inside..and rub it on the cervic. That is the pap smear part. After he removes the speculum..then he will insert 2 fingers to feel for placement of the uterus..and the ovaries. Thats all there is too it. It may be slightly uncomfortable. You may become embarrassed. Try to relax, and breath and find something in the room to concentrate on. It only takes a couple of minutes. Also you may experience so slight spotting afterwards..which is completely normal. With a pelvic exam, it is the same thing as a Pap Smear. You can go to your GP or an OB/GYN to do it. It doesn't matter they all do them. All females are different, I go to OB/GYN because I work side by side with all my GPs. There is nothing whatsoever to be nervous about. A pelvic exam can be either external, where the dr feels your tummy or internal where they feel inside through your vagina but there's nothing to worry about, it's a little bit uncomfortable but the more you worry the worse that is. A smear test is not a pelvic exam- during a smear test your dr will use a speculum so they can take a little scraping of the cells of your cervix, which again can be a bit uncomfortable but not if you relax. It's normal to have a pelvic exam at the same time as a smear. |
