Can you have a pelvic exam while on your period?

I have been having sharp pains in my lower abdomen (pelvic area) on and off for a few days now. Sometimes it is very painful, sharp pains, and other times it is a dull cramping feeling, and sometimes I don't feel anything at all. While I'm not certain that it is anything vaginal/cervical, etc., I am really starting to worry about what the pain could be from. And I'm going to Mexico on Friday, so of course I would like to go without pain. The problem is I started my period yesterday, and know that when you schedule a pelvic exam, you aren't supposed to do it when you're on your period. But if I am in pain, can or will a doctor still perform a pelvic exam, or will it just be an ultrasound, if anything? Has anyone ever had a pelvic exam while on their period? I really don't want to have to have one (they're bad enough when you're not on your period!) but I'm definitely looking for some relief. Any ideas people? Thanks in advance.

There is a difference between a pelvic exam and a pap smear (which is one PART of the pelvic exam).

You should NOT have a pap smear while you're bleeding. However, if you are suffering pain, they CAN do a bi-manual pelvic palpitation and/or a visual exam of the vaginal canal and cervical face/opening.

When you call to schedule you're appointment be sure to tell them you have your period, but that you're suffering exceptional lower abdominal pains that you feel need to be assessed sooner than later. They will most likely see you, but will want to schedule you at another time for a pap.

When I went in for my 6 week postpartum checkup with my doc, I had started my period the day before and he said to come in anyway because it was important. If you are having strange symptoms like you say, I would DEFINATELY go in....just let them know when you make your appt. what is going on. Have fun in Mexico.

Yeah, but it is gross and uncomfortable. I would rather wait,it possible.

You can if you're having a problem. Alert the office when you go in that you're having your period. You should still be checked if you're having unusual pain. They won't do a pap, but they will still examine you.

I went in for a pelvic exam because I was in pain and it happened to be that I was on my period while my appointment was scheduled. All they made me do was take my tampon out and they put a towel under me. It was uncomfortable and kind of awkward, but I kept on reminding myself that it wasn't anything new to them. So if you are experiencing pain, I suggest to still go in. Good luck!
