Pelvic exam on a plus sized woman?

I have my first pelvic exam in the morning and I'm so scared! I'm 22 and this is my first one. I'm a large gal (size 24W) and am afraid they wont be able to see what they need to see. Has any other larger women out there had this done and it not been a nightmare? PS I"m a virgin.....

I completely understand where you're coming from. I'm a size 26w myself. I had my first one when I wore about an 18w, and recently at at 26w. I didn't feel any different and the doctor didn't have any problems. The only difference I felt for me, is getting my chunky legs into those stirrups. lol You'll be just fine.

Wow, good question and good answers!!!!!! Report It

I am glad the other ladies here have had reasonably pleasant experiences with doctors. I am size 20W and have gotten nothing but disrespect about my weight when I do work up the courage to go to the doc...I havent had a pelvic in years. Report It

don't worry, the docs know what they are doing. It's scary for everyone. They are used to it.

They will handle it..just remember these words...move down on the table....lol Im sorry Everything will be fine and they will see what they need to believe me.

won't be a problem at all...stay relaxed and it's over in a very short time

Don't worry. The doctor will not have a problem doing the exam. I am just as big as you and it wasn't a problem for me.

Doctors are used to dealing with women of all shapes and sizes so don't feel concerned....it will be a little uncomfortable but will be over quickly. The doctor wont have any trouble finding what they need.

I know you're nervous, but you'll be fine. You will be on a special table with your feet in metal stirrups. They will cover your lower portion with a paper cover so you'll feel a little more modest. They have a very bright light and use a special tool called a speculum they use so they will be able to check everything. The doctor usually tells you as they go along what he/she is doing, so you always know what's going on. It usually only takes about 5 minutes. It's a little uncomfortable and I'm still a little embarrassed after 25 years of them, but knowing that the exam helps in the prevention of certain diseases makes it worth the temporary discomfort.

I'm a size 22W and I've never had any problems. It is normal to be scared and uncomfortable but you will be fine. It doesn't take long for it to be over with and most doctors will explain what they are doing step by step. It is more uncomfortable than painful. And I know plenty of women bigger than you and the doctors have never had a problem seeing what they need to see, so you'll be fine. I promise.

Don't worry that your a virgin, let the Dr. know that and they will be very gentle, use a smaller instrument and much more lubricant. Also, your weight will have no interference with seeing what they need to see. They will be looking inside you at your vagina and cervix, they won't be concerned with what is outside. Don't worry, take deep breaths and try to relax it will be over in seconds. Good luck!!

No worries hon, I'm a big girl too and they have no problem getting the exam done. The nurse told me my first time, "OK darlin', You can hang your pride up out here and get it on your way back out the door." They know first timers are very nervous and the are very understanding and helpful. Don't worry so much, it dosent last long enough for you to worry so much about! :)

It may make it a tad tougher to feel when they push around on your stomach, but that should be all. The doctor will do this in conjunction with their fingers to feel your internal female organs. I'm a big girl and have had 3 kids, so I should know.

size doesn't matters the doc know what to do just relax yourself and it will be over in a min remember to relax
